Satin Ribbon in DIP9

By and © Shelleyrae Cusbert

This should also work with DIP7 and possibly earlier versions of PictureIt!

Open the page to which you wish to add the ribbon. Decide the length you desire and Insert >Shape>Square Stretch the square into a rectangle the width and length of the ribbon you want. Remove the line on the rectangle Format>Shape or line>Line Thickness>None

Fill your ribbon with your choice of design …either  a solid colour , gradient or picture.

Duplicate the original ribbon and use Effects>Fill with Texture or Colour > Picture to fill the rectangle with the DIP gallery image White Satin Background. Adjust as desired.

Move this rectangle of satin over your ribbon.

Use Effects>Transparency >Even and adjust the transparency to about 60 depending upon the colour of your base and your own preferences.

Group the two objects.

Select Effects>Distortion Brush>Shrink to pinch the ribbon. Start with a large brush, place the crosshair in the middle of the ribbons width and pinch. Change brush sizes and make changes one click at a time until it gives you the pinch you desire. As a final adjustment use the largest brush to add a final pinch. This seems to add a more realistic twist.

To add a knot in the pinch use the marquee tool to copy a square part of the ribbon that is both shadowed and light. Move over the pinch and use Effects>Skew Object to slant it to one side. Add a soft shadow Effects>Shadow to the shape. Then duplicate and flip this shape and place over or under the other, lining up the top and bottom  edges. Group the two shapes. Use Effects>Shadow to add a shadow to the combined shape eg drop left.

Pinch using Effects>Distortion Brush>Shrink. To clean up any stray areas use the Effects>Transparency>Transparency Brush with a hard edge at 100% transparency.

Group all of the objects together and to add a final touch of realism add a shadow to the ribbon.
