Cropping a photograph or background
paper to a shape is easily accomplished with Digital Image Pro. This tutorial
should be applicable to both versions 9 and 10.
Open a new blank canvas or drag your
photograph onto your existing canvas or duplicate the photograph (so you are not
working on the original).
Ensure the item to be cropped is
selected.
Click on the Marqee Selection Tool to
launch the options palette.
You can choose from a variety of
preset shapes to crop an image with. Click on the arrow to reveal the options.
You can also choose to maintain Shape
proportions when drawing out the shape. Select any shape and position your
cursor which becomes a crosshair on the object. Hold the left mouse button down
and drag to select an area. The area you are selecting will be opaque as you
draw.
Release the mouse button to finish.
The selected area will be surrounded by a dashed line.
To edit the shape and therefore the
selection area, choose Adjust Marquee.
The shape will again become opaque.
The shape can then be moved, resized, rotated or edited as desired. Select Done
when editing is complete.
You can choose to Feather the
selection by selecting and entering the desired value. Feathering will soften
the edges of the selected area by the number of pixels specified.
To complete the crop you can choose
to:
Click Invert on the Marquee palette.
This reverses the selected area. Choose Edit from the toolbar and then Delete to
leave only the cropped area. Click on the Object tool and then anywhere on the
canvas to complete.
OR Select from the toolbar Edit >
Duplicate to create a copy of the selected area.
OR Select Edit> Copy and then change
projects to Paste the cropped object in the new project.
* To create non standard shaped
crops, use the + Selection Mode to combine shapes eg combining a rectangle and
circle to create a tag shape
