FAQ: Commenting in the Gallery

Commenting in the Gallery.

While we know we are scrapbooking for ourselves and our families there is no denying that we appreciate the validation we receive when others comment positively on our posted layouts. It encourages us to keep going, when the amount of pictures to scrap may seem overwhelming or when the family isn’t as supportive of our hobby/addiction.
It can be disheartening to not have your layouts commented on when others may have many. The lack of comments a layout may receive is rarely personal There are a myriad of reasons why comments may be sparse that have nothing to do with you personally.

Here are some possible reasons why a layout may not have as many comments as others:

* Volume – at Scrapbook-Bytes there are roughly 300 layouts posted every 24 hours. That’s a lot of layouts. To view and post on one layout (on a DSL connection) takes about 3 - 5 minutes on average. Not many people have 2 hours or so to go through the gallery and comment every day. Most take advantage of the 45 or 95 view and skim through the images, perhaps clicking on only a handful to view more detail.

* Time – Not only the time to look and comment on each image but also the time the layout is posted. Layouts posted early afternoon US EST time appear to receive slightly more comments. This may be largely because it’s when most people are online browsing.

* Similarity – While not a reflection on your layout, when a lot of similar layouts that may use the same kit/elements, colors or general style are posted at a similar time people may comment on just one layout. This is more common after the release of a new kit for example.

* Lack of detail – People like knowing the “behind the scenes” of a layout. If a layout is posted with very little informational detail it may be overlooked. By reproducing your journaling or including additional details in the description the viewer may be more likely to view and comment on your sentiments.

* Popularity – As with everything, styles tend to wax and wane in popularity, and the style of the moment may attract more comments than others of a less popular style. This also applies with popular designers or “celebrity” scrappers. Even if your layout is in the popular style you may fall victim to the point of similarity above.

* Subject – Some layout subjects, such as newborn babies, attract more attention than others. Often it’s just human nature rather than a lack of interest.

* Viewing style – The gallery can be customized by each member to view as desired. The options chosen may mean that others do not see every layout in the gallery.

There is an unspoken etiquette involved in posting comments on layouts.
* If someone comments on your layout, it is polite to leave a response for one of theirs, a simple exchange of appreciation. The old adage applies here ...”You’ve got to give to get”.

* If a layout appeals enough to view it individually, leave a comment on what made you do so. You can comment more specifically on any part of the layout, the design, composition, colors, font choice, journaling, photography or subject. Read the description of the layout to discover more about the layout that you could respond to. If you don’t comment because you are not sure what to say, try a general “Thanks for sharing” or “good work”.

* Do not offer constructive criticism (cc) on a layout without being asked to do so. If members want opinions they will include this request either in the title or description.

* If someone has posted a particularly heartfelt or thoughtful response to your layout or
asked a question, use PM (Private Messaging) to contact them with a response.

Please do not assume anything if you are not receiving many comments to your layouts. It does not mean your layouts, or you, are disliked but more simply for the reasons discussed above and more. Do not let that discourage you from posting and sharing your layouts, or posting comments on others. You willingness to share is appreciated and helps make SBB the wonderful community it is.

As a teacher I was given a list – 101 ways to Praise a Child. The simple phrases on this page go a long way to providing encouragement and recognition, if you are struggling to find a way to comment, perhaps you might find something useful in this list.
