The Resolution or Pixels Per Inch (PPI) is the amount of dots/PIXELS per inch that will be in your image. (The more pixels, the clearer and sharper your image will be - even when enlarged)
For best quality prints you will need to use a higher PPI. Generally 300 PPI is best for printing although some people, depending on their printers, feel that 200PPI is sufficient.
If you only intend to share your layouts via email or upload them to a web page, 72PPI is fine.
Some imaging programs are “memory hogs” IE. They may cause your computer to freeze when you are using a higher resolution and your files are very large.
Setting DPI in Digital Image Pro 9 and 10
DIP allows you to save your chosen DPI as default. To do this, go to:
Tools/Options
In the drop down box next to “Units of Measure” select inches.
Now click on “Resolution Settings”
Select “Custom” and type in 300.0
Click “Okay” then “Okay”
You can choose to use a resolution other than the default for one-off projects by:
File/New
UNCHECK “Maintain Proportions”
Enter the “inch” size you want your layout to be then click in the little circle next to “Image Size” to lock in your size. A little padlock will appear.
Go down to Resolution and highlight the current DPI and type in 200. Click the little circle to lock in your resolution. Click “Done” and “Done”.
Setting DPI in Digital Image Pro 7
You can’t select 200 DPI as the default in DIP7 so you will need to set the DPI each time you open a new file. To do this, go to:
File/New
UNCHECK “Maintain Proportions”
Enter your page size.
Highlight the current resolution and type in 200. Make sure “pixels per inch” is selected.
Click “Done”
