Layers in Digital Image (and versions of PictureIt) are saved in the native format png+. This format differs from png.
This tutorial will use this layered template. You can download this free template, and others I have created for Digital Image Users here in the SBB Download Gallery http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/chat/local_links_search.php?catid=-8
You will need to choose papers and elements of you choice.
I am using “Dream” from the SBB Eclectic Bytes DVD available in the SBB store http://scrapbookbytes.com/store/home.php?cat=293

Open the template ( File> Open and browse to find) Duplicate the template to avoid overwriting the original. Edit> Duplicate Whole Picture and then close the original
In preparation, open 4 - 5 papers to the Files area. (File> Open and browse to select the papers of your choice.)

As you can see to the right each shape on this page is on its own layer in the stack

If you can’t see the stack click on the Stack button on the toolbar or View> Stack or use the keyboard shortcut CONTROL+SHIFT+k
On the stack – click the object at the bottom. You will see the selection handles appear around the object on screen.

With the object selected go to Effects> Fill with Texture or Color

Select Picture

Choose a paper from the Files list at right by clicking on it.

The shape will fill with that paper and move you to the next menu choice. If the paper you selected was the wrong one or you want to change the option, click the back arrow at the bottom of the menu and choose another paper.
If you do not have any papers open or wish to choose another, select an option from the menu at right

Here I have browsed to select another paper.

The shape automatically fills with the chosen paper, and you will be moved to the next menu option. Use the back arrow to choose another paper if desired.
The next window gives you the option to move the paper to change which part of it is showing. You will notice that even though the paper I chose is 12x12, the paper has been scaled to fit the shape, shown by the papers bounding box. While you can move the paper left to right, you can also use a diagonal corner handle to increase (or decrease) the size of the paper – this is useful if a pattern or texture of the paper has become too small.

Here I have resized the paper by dragging the corner handle until at page width, I have then moved it up to ensure that the part I wanted is showing (shown by the bounding lines)

NB – You can not rotate the paper so if you are using stripes for example – make sure they are the orientation you want BEFORE choosing Effect> Fill with Texture or Color
Choose Done to return to the workspace.
Now repeat this action for every layer. If you find that you need to change a selection, click the appropriate layer and use the same steps (here I have replaced the stripes with a pink paisley pattern paper)

In some cases such as the three black rectangles at the top of this layout you may wish to fill them with the same paper. You can do this individually or you can group all three by holding down CONTROL on your keyboard and clicking on the three rectangles in the stack.

Click on the grouping symbol (a blue and yellow puzzle piece) and the rectangles will combine onto one layer. NB: The rectangles will no longer be able to be separated after this step)

Now with that object selected use the Effects> Fill with texture or color> Picture command.

Continue filling each item.
Of course sometimes part of the template may be too small or too big, increase or decrease the size of the layer BEFORE filling the piece. Here I have reduced the size of the journaling tag, and moved it slightly also before filling with the paper of my choice. You can even delete a layer if you want to replace it with something else.
In the case of title text such as the YOU shown here, the text will have been flattened, which means when you choose to fill it, each letter will fill with the same pattern. If you wish you can use your Marquee or another selection tool, to separate the letters and fill each individually.

However in some cases text is editable – the font used should be Times New Roman which as an essential system font everyone will have installed, simply click on the layer to select it and then move your cursor over the text and click and drag to highlight the text. You can then replace the text with your own journaling, change font, font size and/or font color. In some cases the text may be Shaped text in which case you need to double click on the text box to edit the text.
In this template the Date Here box is editable. I have replaced the DATE HERE text with July 2006, changed the font to Suzie’s Hand and even changed the text alignment to center.

With this text I have applied a Color text box. You can edit it by going to Text> Text Box Color and choosing a color from the palette, or using a HSL or RGB code by choosing More Colors choose or to remove the fill color choose No Fill. Select OK to apply your choice.

With all the layers filled you then need to add your photo. You can accomplish in the exact same way as you filled the other layers. If the photo you want to use does not fit comfortably within the defined shape than you can opt to simply add your photo to the layout.

With the layout now filled you can work on personalizing the layout with extra touches, including elements and journaling. Use filters to add beveling to the text or other effects.
Finally add shadows to the objects on the page.

Your page is complete!
Have fun with these templates and creating your own is fun too! Make sure to share them with us here at SBB!
